Principal Cloud Engineer

Full Time Perm

Salary : $129,500 - $194,300, plus 10% annual bonus

Location: Columbus, OH or Merrillville, IN

The Cloud Transformation and Operations team supports cloud capabilities as well as general data center infrastructure for the NiSource ecosystem.

The Principal Cloud Engineer in the NiSource IT department supports the design, development, and implementation of cloud and data center solutions for various products and platforms. The Principal Cloud Engineer will focus on assigned technical products and platforms. This role involves working on an agile product and platform team that requires hands-on technical work, problem-solving, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Technical Support: Assist in the design, development, and implementation of solutions for assigned technical product/platform

  • Solution Development: Develop and implement solutions that enhance the functionality and performance of assigned products or platforms

  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, analysts, and stakeholders, to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions

  • Code and configuration Review and Quality Assurance: Participate in reviews and ensure that solutions meet quality standards and best practices

  • Troubleshooting and Support: Diagnose and resolve technical issues, providing support and maintenance for existing systems

  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies to contribute to innovation and continuous improvement in platform solutions

Technical responsibilities: Cloud and Data Center

  • Design and solution the deployment of multi-cloud solutions across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud

  • Lead solutioning of enterprise-wide cloud governance policies to ensure scalability, compliance, and security

  • Lead efforts to optimize cloud infrastructure for cost-effectiveness, performance, and resiliency

  • Develop innovative cloud-native solutions, leveraging serverless architectures, containerization, and managed services

  • Design and implement disaster recovery strategies and ensure their integration across hybrid and cloud environments

  • Drive innovation in container orchestration strategies using Kubernetes and Docker

  • Establish comprehensive observability frameworks, enabling real-time monitoring, logging, and alerting across all environments

  • Mentor teams on adopting DevOps culture, tools, and practices across development and operations

  • Mentor junior engineers promoting career growth

  • Oversee the architecting of storage platforms such as Pure Storage, NetApp and IBM

  • Oversee the architecting of virtualization / hyper converged platforms such as VMware, Nutanix, etc.

  • Collaborate with C-level executives to define long-term infrastructure strategies and align them with business objectives

  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams on large-scale projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience

  • 10+ years of experience with cloud infrastructure and data center domain

  • 10+ years of experience in IT systems architecture, systems design, development, and maintenance of large-scale systems

  • 10+ years of experience working with a variety of infrastructure and security doma ins e.g. Cloud, Data center, Network, Hosting, Service Management etc.

  • 3+ years of experience leading projects or teams to include supporting, mentoring, and coaching junior engineers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of the PMI process groups (initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing) and current Project Management methodologies

  • Solid understanding of multi-cloud environments

  • Azure or AWS certifications

  • Working knowledge of the gas utility industry

  • Knowledge of industry best practices in modeling, simulation, and testing
